Zombieland

Oh, the joys of indiscriminately blowing away flesh eating zombies!

2009 film from director Ruben Fleischer stars Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson.

Learn the rules of survival first then go on a road trip across country as Eisenberg seeks his parents, Stone looks for Playland amusement park, and Harrelson searches for a Twinkie...all trying to survive in a world gone crazy with zombies.

Great fun, funny...look for a great cameo by Bill Murray as...well, Bill Murray.

The Man Who Would Be King

Michael Caine and Sean Connery star in this 1975 film directed by John Huston.

Two rogue British soldiers set themselves up as gods in a small country that can't contain their greed and egos. Great comedy/action/adventure story based on the Rudyard Kipling yarn.

Fun, funny, and a showcase for both actors. Has Michael Caine actually been in every movie ever made?

Bringing Up Baby

Howard Hawks directed this comedy starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

One of the best movie comedies ever.

Grant plays a nerdy professor who is drawn into the life of a wacky heiress who changes him forever. A totally screwball comedy if there ever was one.

Grant and Hepburn are wonderful together. Lots of abusrd situations but it all works. The stars shine in this one.

Remade (sort of) as "What's Up Doc?" with Ryan O'Neal and Barbara Streisand.

Don't miss this one.

The Awful Truth

1937 Leo McCarey comedy stars Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.

A separated couple are both about to remarry but spend their time trying to foil each other's plans for wedded bliss.

Very funny screwball comedy which set the tone for the Cary Grant "character" which was honed over his next few movies.

Funny, and holds up even today.

Noises Off

1992 farce directed by Peter Bogdanovich starring Michael Caine, John Ritter, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, Nicolette Sheridan, Marilu Henner.

Hysterical farce about a theatre director trying to whip his cast and show into shape before its opening. We see it from the audience's point of view as well as from backstage.

Great cast makes the most of it...with many laughs along the way.

The Great Race

Ok, so it's overly long. And sometimes stupid. But stupid can be funny too.

1965 effort from Blake Edwards stars Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, Keenan Wynn, and Peter Falk.

Curtis is "The Great Leslie", a heroic daredevil who proposes a transcontinental automobile race around the turn of the centuiry. His foil is "Professor Fate", Jack Lemmon, who overacts to the hilt and makes this fluff actually funny. Natalie Wood looks great as a feminist reporter, and Peter Falk is hysterical as Lemmon's sidekick.

Gimmicky and tries too hard (and, believe me, Edwards threw EVERYTHING into this one including a bar room brawl, pie fight, and more). But there are some genuinely funny moments. I particularly like the first part of the film - which is sort of a live action Road Runner cartoon with Professor Fate coming up with outlandish ways to do in his rival Leslie.

The List of Adrian Messenger

1963 film directed by John Huston starring George C. Scott, Kirk Douglas, Dana Wynter.

Murder mystery with an interesting twist: stars Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, and Burt Lancaster all appear in cameo roles but are disguised. Half the fun is trying to pick out who's under the heavy make-up and prosthetics. It adds to the enjoyment but the film holds up on its own as a suspenseful mystery.

Bronco Billy

This 1980 film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood has its uneven moments but is still worth a viewing.

Former shoe salesman from New Jersey (Eastwood) reinvents himself as a cowboy and takes his cheesy wild west show on the road with a group of misfits. Unable to make ends meet, he still keeps the show going to entertain the "young buckaroos".

Things are complicated along the way when co-star Sondra Locke, as a spoiled, rich heiress is forced to tag along with the show.

Despite some sub-plots that get in the way, this film is funny, quirky, and a tribute to anyone who ever thought about giving it all up to live the life you've only dreamed of living.

Steelyard Blues

Steelyard Blues
This offbeat, funny, counterculture romp stars Donald Sutherland, Jane Fonda, John Savage, Howard Hesseman, and Peter Boyle ( in a tour de force performance).
Veldini, a former demolition derby driver, is released from jail and returns to meet up with old cronies: his prostitute girlfriend (Fonda) and Eagle (Boyle). The plan: fix up an old PBY aircraft and fly off to a place where there are no jails.
A noble goal, but complicating their endeavor is the fact that they need to steal needed parts for the plane from the U.S. Navy and Veldini's brother (Hesseman) who is determined to see his brother back in jail. Along the way Veldini finally gets to complete a life-long goal: wrecking the only American model car
he's never smashed in a derby.
But the high point for me is Peter Boyle as Eagle. A Human Fly
in the circus he checks himself in and out of the mental institution
at will by climbing up and down the building. He assumes a
different identity in each scene with elaborate costumes and
attitudes from an airline pilot, cowboy, and more - including what
has to be the best Marlon Brando impersonation in a pinball parlor.
Written by David S. Ward and directed by Alan Myerson, this
1973 film is a delight.
Note: TV version was released as The Final Crash.
