The Apostle

Robert Duvall wrote, directed, produced, and stars in this 1997 drama about a southern minister who commits an act of violence and sets out to atone for his sins. Great feel for time and place and a deeply moving story of a man seeking redemption. Duvall is fantastic.

Also stars Farrah Fawcett, Billy Bob Thronton, and June Carter Cash.

Excalibur

Best version of the Arthurian legend. 1981 film from John Boorman stars Nigel Terry, Helen Mirren, patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, and Nicol Williamson as Merlin.

From the Sword in the Stone, to the Lady of the Lake...Arthur, Lancelot, and all take us along as they conceive of Camelot, help it rise to glory, and fall apart despite their best effrorts to remaijn true to their vision of a magical time and land that became England. Williamson shows us a different kind of Merlin, but a fitting one to guide us along this age-old journey of hope and redemption.

Beau Geste

Another terrific film from 1939 (What was it about that year?).

Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, Robert Preston, and Brian Donlevy star in this story about honor, duty, and redemption.

Great opening draws you into this French Foreign Legion adventure where three brothers combat the enemy and their sadistic officer. Sentimental ending ( I won't spoil it) is memorable.

There were two other versions I am aware of: a silent film version starring Ronald Colman and a '60s remake with Telly Savales. But this is the first one I saw and it has stuck with me.
